FREELANCE CLIENT PROJECT — 05/05

King Size Bedframe

Working CAD studies and assembly drawings for a freelance client — designing the hardware and connection system needed to support bed slats on a frame the client had already designed.

Scope

The client came to me with the frame itself already designed — the ball-and-post form, proportions, and overall look. What they didn't have was a way to actually support a mattress and slats on that frame. My job was to design and model the missing hardware: the connection system between posts and rails, and the slat-support structure, in a way that stayed true to the frame's existing form language.

These drawings and renders were working studies rather than finished deliverables — built to think through how the pieces would actually go together, not as a final presentation package. The connection shown here uses a keyed slot joint: two pins on the post register into matching notches on the rail bracket, resisting both lateral and rotational movement without visible fasteners.

General Dimensions

Dimensioned orthographic views establish the frame's full footprint and proportions — front, side, and plan views drawn to scale with a formal title block, ready to hand off for fabrication.

Post to Rail Connection

A keyed slot joint locks each rail into its post: two pins on the post register into matching notches on the rail bracket, resisting both lateral and rotational movement without visible fasteners on the finished piece.

Ball to Post Connection

Each post terminates in a threaded spherical finial, giving a clean decorative cap while providing a straightforward assembly point that doesn't require adhesives.

Working Through the Build-Up

Renders were staged in build-up order — bare frame, slat base, mattress, and finally the brass hardware pass — as a way to check that the slat-support hardware I was designing actually made sense once a mattress sat on top of it, and that the added hardware read as part of the frame rather than an afterthought.
